At the Armory

In a partnership with the First District Police Department, Calvary helped set up a “store” at the Armory, which is currently sheltering 400 displaced residents of New Orleans. People from all over the city donated diapers, water, toiletries and other essential supplies. Our pastor, Amy, is taking some pastoral care shifts at the Armory, as the DC Government has arranged to provide continuous pastoral care for the evacuees there.

In Worship

Last Sunday, September 4, members and friends of Calvary offered prayers by calling out names of those for whom they are concerned and voicing grief, pain, concern to God. Prayers continue in formal worship and across the entire congregation throughout the week. If you have a specific prayer request, please feel free to send it in: office@calvarydc.org

Connecting People

Because of Calvary’s connection to St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, we’ve spent a lot of time trying to help people connect. If you are looking for information about a friend or family member from St. Charles, click here. Other faith communities in the DC area are looking for ways to help, too. Temple Sinai Washington DC, Bethesda United Methodist Church, Washington Hebrew Congregation and others have been able to make connections through mutual friends and family and provide immediate assistance to several in need. The wide-reaching love of the larger community of faith is beautiful to be a part of.

Providing Assistance

Calvary has already been able to pay hotel bills, provide clothing, offer financial assistance and help with transportation through the generous gifts of so many of you. A specific detailed list of these gifts is available in the church office. If you are looking for a way to help, check this list for immediate needs, or send in a check to the church office marked “Katrina Relief” and the staff and deacons will continue to meet the immediate needs as they become aware of them.

Becoming Partners

In the months and years ahead the people of New Orleans will need our help to rebuild. For that reason, we are encouraging our congregation members to begin thinking about how they might want to partner with St. Charles Avenue Baptist or other faith congregations as they struggle to get up and running. In addition to providing funds the possibility of hands-on rebuilding and relief might become a reality. Do you have time or money to spare for the rebuilding effort?
